Why take Mental Health First Aid Seniors training?
Mental Health First Aid Seniors trains participants to effectively respond to an emerging mental health problem or crisis, until the situation is resolved or appropriate treatment is found.
AIM OF THE 14 HOUR TRAINING
- Recognize the symptoms of mental health problems or crises as they develop
- Provide initial help when dealing with a mental health problem or crisis
- Guide a senior and/or caregiver toward appropriate professional help
- Provide strategies and resources to support both seniors and their caregivers

Mental Health First Aid Seniors Training Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who is providing this training opportunity?
Funding for Mental Health First Aid Seniors training is provided by the Government of Alberta. Training is provided by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Coordination support is provided by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division.
2. What is the cost?
Mental Health First Aid Seniors (MHFA Seniors) is being offered free-of-charge to Albertans until March of 2020.
3. What are the training dates and locations?
Training dates and locations will be arranged across the province until March 2020. You are encouraged to keep checking this website for upcoming available dates. Due to high demand, pre-registration is now closed. Pre-registrants will be contacted when training opportunities become available in your area, and will also be posted on this website. 4. How long is the training?
MHFA Seniors is an in-person, two-day (eight hours per day) course. Depending on instructor availability, the course can be held on two days over the course of four weeks, but is generally offered on two consecutive days.
Some half-day sessions will be made available to seniors and their caregivers. These sessions will be completed over the course of four consecutive days. The schedule is dependent on instructor availability. The timeline of course delivery is determined by the course provider. We do not have flexibility in how the course will be delivered.
5. Is the training available in other languages?
At present, MHFA Seniors is only available in English and French. It cannot be translated into other languages.
6. Can our organization host a session for our staff and volunteers?
In consultation with the project coordinator, there is potential to offer sessions to your staff. The maximum number of participants per session is 25. The minimum is 10. If there is space available to accommodate others in your community along with your staff, we would appreciate the opportunity to invite others.
