This September, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division is hosting a workplace conference designed to improve mental health outcomes in Alberta workplaces. Working Stronger – Equipping Albertans for Better Workplace Mental Health is two days of networking, information exchange and dialogue that will advance our efforts to support healthier workplaces across the province. It brings together the most creative and inspiring mental health thinkers and leaders in the field.
Abstracts will be accepted until April 2nd, 2018
Presenters will be notified if their abstracts have been accepted by April 16th, 2018
Presenters must agree to be paid registrants of the conference. Honoraria, accommodation and travel reimbursement are not available for presenters.

Depression in the Workplace
Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, it can manifest itself in the workplace as reduced productivity, decreased enthusiasm and difficulty making decisions. Often times, a depressed employee will not seek treatment because they fear the effect it will have on their job and are concerned about confidentiality. Many employees are also unaware they have depression, or fear their insurance is inadequate to cover costs.
This stream will share stories of lived experience, review the signs and symptoms of depression, review available resources, and discuss the practicalities of workplace accommodations.
Law, Policy and Practice
The Law, Policy and Practice stream will showcase successful or emerging policies and practices being implemented across the province that support the mental well-being of Alberta’s workplace. This will include discussions of challenges, successes and learning’s helpful to participants’ learning experiences as well as the current law regarding mental health in the workplace and its implications in the Alberta context.
Please note: Applicants are encouraged to weave other topics of interest into their discussion such as addiction, bullying, unions, etc.

SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT
Complete the following information:
- Identify the stream and area of interest.
- Choose presentation format
- Choose Time Preference: 30, 60 or 90-minute presentation
- Name(s) of presenter(s) as you would like them to appear in the conference program.
- Key Contact Information (address, email and telephone number.)
- Biography of each presenter (50 words or less.)
- Title of Presentation (relevant to submission/focus of your presentation.)
- Abstract suitable for inclusion in the conference program (sales pitch/description of your presentation.)
- How does your submission relate to your selected stream?
- Key-points that will be in your PowerPoints or an outline of your presentation.
- Presentation method details (also include audio/visual equipment required, room set up preference, etc.)
All submissions will be evaluated using the following criteria:
- Relevance to the conference theme.
- Clarity and coherence of the submission.
- Relevance and utility to participants.
- Evidence that submission will encourage interaction among conference participants.
- Contribution of knowledge, expertise or best practices.
- Key points of presentation and evidence of “participant take-away”.
- We encourage presenters to include a lived experience component or perspective where relevant.
Conference sessions will be offered in a variety of formats:
Panel Presentation (60 or 90 minute)
A Panel Discussion is a team of panelists that you choose to present on a specific stream. We recommend that you have no more than 3-4 panelists in your group for a 90 minute timeframe.
Poster Presentations will be offered display space at the conference. You are welcome to bring additional flyers/support documentation for handouts.
Solo presentations (30-60-90 minutes)
Opportunity to share learning’s from a current program or new and emerging supports related to one of the streams.
Please note: Based on the number of presentations received, we may combine presentations. If your abstract is not accepted, you may have an opportunity to present a poster presentation.
ACCEPTANCE AS A PRESENTER
Please note: Presenters must register and pay to attend the conference. Honoraria and travel reimbursement are not available.
- Presenters will be asked to submit an electronic version of their presentation prior to the conference.
- Electronic copies of the presentations will be made available to conference delegates following the conference on the CMHA Alberta website in pdf format.
- Presenters are encouraged to and are responsible for providing written material to conference participants (your powerpoint and/or resources, etc.)
- Presenters will be provided with a designated time to present by the conference committee.
