Movember Move to Mental Health Motivation for Moustache
Nov 5, 2012
Tom Shand, Executive Director of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association, has joined the movement – and begun growing a moustache.
This year the annual Movember campaign is being expanded to include men’s mental health. And Tom Shand, Executive Director of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association, has joined the movement – and begun growing a moustache.
“I am delighted that Movember has expanded to include men’s mental health,” said Shand. “Men are often more reluctant than women to seak help, particularly relating to their own mental health. Movember is a hugely successful medium for awareness, promotion and fund raising – all of which are major priorities for men’s mental health.”
As for the moustache, Shand said: “My wife and daughters have never been too keen on my growing one in but, given the cause, they are supporting this effort. I had a moustache in university and in my early working years as a journalist but some 20 odd years ago I shaved it off and said I wouldn’t grow it back until the Minnesota Vikings won the Super Bowl. That clearly has not happened, and sadly is not likely to in the near future, so I have chosen this good reason to abandon that random pledge. I hope people will support this and that mental health will become an ongoing cause for Movember.”
